Open Education in Music Education

Welcome to my site! An important element of open education is digital technologies and the use of these technologies to provide more equitable experiences in education as well as the ability to share every aspect of education much more easily.

While I do think there is a benefit to more sharing and collaboration in education, especially in post-secondary education, there is a level of comfort one must have with "opening" yourself, your products, etc., to others scrutiny; especially with social media, which I have avidly avoided for the past 2-3 years. I mention social media specifically because it is the preferred method of open sharing described in the open education literature.

Despite my personal feelings, I understand the place of social media in the education profession so I invite, nay encourage, you to make a professional connection with me via Linkedin or Facebook (where I have returned after several years of hiatus...I currently have three connections).  Also, please comment on what I have shared and please share what you do as a music educator so we can encourage each other in our growth as professionals.

Explore and learn more about open education, me, and my professional endeavors, and please share your thoughts with me at any point in your exploration of my site. Enjoy!

Open Education

The recent conception of open education and practices in the 21st century really began at the turn of the century with the availability of the internet to anyone owning a computer. This allowed for sharing of information almost instantaneously which previously required face-to-face interactions, the telephone, or some type of delivery method, such as USPS.

Check out the Open Music Education page to learn more about open education and the new pedagogical practices that are being used and examined by scholars, and enthusiasts, in education.
